Pastor Herb was raised in Alameda, California and graduated from Alameda High School.

He attended Dordt College, Calvin College, Grand Rapids Community College, and graduated from Davenport University with a B. A.

He was employed by Amway Corporation for 35 years in Research and Development as a Scientist. He holds three United States Patents in the design and functionality for a Water Filter device.

After retiring from Amway, he entered into the Candidacy program for a United Methodist Local Pastor.

He became a licensed Substitute Teacher for the Kent Intermediate School District and has taught at many of the area schools.

He attended Duke Divinity School in Raleigh, NC and received a Incense to Preach. He was appointed by the Bishop to East Nelson UMC as a Local Pastor in June 2004; and he is enrolled in continuing education Course of Study at the University of Indianapolis.

In the past he has held several post ions in the Lowell area community: Lowell Charter Township Board of Review, Lowell Township elected Trustee (4 terms), President of Parent Teacher Organization, Member or YMCA Board of Directors, and member of Community Advisory Committee for Lowell Area Cable Television.

Although brought up in the Christian Reformed Faith, he was married at South Methodist United Methodist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher.

His wife, Emmy, and him transferred their Membership to the First United Methodist Church of Lowell and served the following positions there:

  • Chairperson for Staff/Parish Committee

  • Middle School Camp Dean
  • Director of Christian Camping for the Grand Rapids District
  • Member of the Advisory Committee to the Grand Rapids District Superintendent

Children's Sermon: Do Something nice for someone today!

Children's message:

The story of the Widow’s mite.  The widow only put in two pennies compared to the many coins put in by the rich people. Yet, because she gave all she had, Jesus said that her gift represented her great faith.  Even though her gift was much smaller than the others, Jesus said that she actually put in more than the others as far a God was concerned.
